Restaurant signage is the most expensive marketing decision most operators make — and the most visible. A storefront sign has to survive Ohio Valley winters, hit a franchisor's brand book to the Pantone, clear a city sign permit, satisfy a landlord's criteria packet, and be ready the day the doors open. Single-location concepts, regional groups, and national chains all run into the same gauntlet: a compressed construction schedule, an opening date that cannot move, and a signage line item that touches landlord approvals, electrical permits, and corporate brand approvals all at once. Tri-State Signs has built restaurant signage for more than 500 locations across the Cincinnati Tri-State and beyond, including national operators like Ruth's Chris, Skyline Chili, Freddy's, Smoothie King, and Chipotle.

COMMON SIGN TYPES WE BUILD FOR RESTAURANT

Restaurant programs typically require a coordinated sign package, not a single sign. The pieces work together: the channel letters draw the eye from the road, the monument or pylon picks up the highway driver, the menu board converts the order, and the wayfinding gets the right car to the right window. We build all of it in-house.

    • Front-lit and halo-lit channel letters for storefront and facade identification
    • Internally-illuminated cabinet signs for end-cap and in-line restaurant locations
    • Monument signs and multi-tenant pylon panels for road-frontage visibility
    • Drive-thru menu boards, COD (confirmation order display) systems, and clearance bars
    • Digital menu boards and outdoor digital order point displays
    • Patio identification, sandwich boards, and outdoor seating wayfinding
    • Interior dimensional logos, lobby branding, restroom ID, and ADA-compliant interior packages

    CODE & COMPLIANCE CONSIDERATIONS

Restaurant signage sits at the intersection of three rule sets: the municipality, the landlord, and the franchisor. Cincinnati, Hamilton, West Chester, Mason, Florence, and most Tri-State jurisdictions calculate maximum sign area as a percentage of facade square footage, regulate setback for monument signs, and require separate electrical permits for any illuminated sign. Shopping center and end-cap restaurants almost always have a sign criteria packet that overrides city code with stricter rules — illumination type, raceway color, font, and mounting all spelled out. On top of that, franchise operators must hit the brand book exactly: Pantone colors, return depths, trim cap colors, and approved illumination methods. We pull all permits in-house, design to landlord criteria on first submission, and deliver shop drawings for franchisor approval before any aluminum is cut.

    WHY TRI-STATE FOR RESTAURANT

Tri-State Signs has been building restaurant signage in the Cincinnati region since 1994. Every sign we build is fabricated by UL-certified technicians in our Hamilton, Ohio shop — meaning the electrical components carry a UL listing for code compliance and inspection. We pull permits in-house rather than outsourcing to a permit runner, which compresses the typical 6-12 week opening timeline. National operators rely on us as a regional partner because we can plug into existing project management platforms, deliver on-time install for grand openings, and provide the closeout documentation corporate teams require for program reimbursement. Most restaurant projects are scoped within one business day of receiving plans.
