Digital signs — also called Electronic Message Centers or EMCs — are full-color LED displays that let you change your message remotely from a laptop or phone. As an authorized Watchfire dealer, we specify, install, and service the same outdoor LED displays you see on the most successful businesses in town. They're the highest-ROI sign upgrade most retailers, restaurants, churches, and dealerships ever make: the ability to promote a daily special, announce a service, or rotate brand messaging dramatically increases the working surface of your sign.
Materials & Construction
Watchfire builds outdoor EMCs in pixel pitches from 19 mm down to 6 mm — finer pitch means higher resolution and closer viewing distances. Cabinets are powder-coated aluminum with a fully-sealed front-serviceable design (no rear access required) and IP-rated for outdoor weather. They're driven by a dedicated cellular or networked controller. We typically integrate the EMC into a new or existing pylon or monument structure, then run dedicated 120V or 240V electrical service and bonded grounding per NEC.
Common Use Cases
- Restaurants promoting daily specials and limited-time offers
- Auto dealerships rotating inventory and finance offers
- Churches with weekly service times and event announcements
- Schools displaying lunch menus, sports scores, and event reminders
- Retail centers rotating multi-tenant promotions
- Healthcare practices announcing new providers and seasonal services
Code & Permit Considerations
EMCs are subject to two layers of regulation: the underlying sign permit (size, height, setback) and a separate set of EMC-specific rules in most municipalities — minimum dwell time per message (typically 8 seconds), no animation or video, automatic brightness dimming for night, and sometimes a maximum number of EMC signs per parcel. Some jurisdictions prohibit EMCs entirely on certain corridors. We pre-vet the address before quoting and pull the permits.
Pricing Range
$20,000 – $80,000
Pricing is driven by display size and pixel pitch. A small monochrome message strip retrofit on an existing structure can come in under $20,000. A full-color 4′×8′ 16 mm full-color EMC integrated into a new pylon typically runs $30,000–$60,000. Large, fine-pitch displays and dual-faced installations exceed $80,000.
Lifespan & Maintenance
Watchfire warranties their displays for 5–7 years and the LEDs are rated for 100,000+ hours of usable life — roughly 15–20 years in real-world use. Maintenance is minimal: keep the face clean, verify the brightness sensor seasonally, and update content through the included cloud software. Watchfire's parts pipeline is excellent for service.
